One of the easiest ways to move the mouse in Mac OS X and other operating systems is to use a Java Robot. It can also simulate other events. For example, the mouse down or even a key press. • It doesn't work for me either. I don't know if it's supposed to be that way or not, but it's frustrating.

Edge scrolling only works in full screen mode, check you video settings, you are probably in 'windowed fullscreen' instead of just plain 'fullscreen' mode. The windowed mode makes the edge trickier to find.

  • I've noticed if you want to edge scroll down, you have to do it very slowly and leave the mouse right at the edge of the control bar (not all the way to the bottom of the screen) for it to work. Does that make sense? It is frustrating for sure.
  • I haven't been able to go down per say....zoom out using the mouse instead of the vid icon yes, but not up or down. It'd really help things a lot. Not frustrating to me, but definitely a need as the zoom usually zooms too close to where you can't see the speech bubbles or too far away that you can't see their facial expressions while talking...

  • @Stormkeep: I'm in fullscreen mode. Edge scrolling works fine if I put the mouse against the top of the screen or the sides, but it won't work if I push against the bottom.
@abraelyn: I think I get what you're saying. I'll see if I can get it work.

Well, thanks for the tip. I'll try this next time I play but scrolling the screen shouldn't really be a skill challenge minigame.
  • @Gabby...try clicking anywhere on the bottom (mine usually ends up being the floor of my sims house) while you move your mouse down. Side note: click only once and hold it down while moving the mouse down....this should do the trick

We're talking about Sims 3 camera mode. The new Sims 4 camera mode isn't an option for me since it doesn't allow to tilt the camera up and down freely (only by zooming in/out). But in Sims 3 mode side scrolling is a pain in the behind it seems.
  • I'm having this issue too, I can't edgescroll down. How do I know if I'm in full screen or windows full screen?

Check in the menu under game options.

Later -- okay, the game where my numberpad arrows didn't work, the cursor arrows worked just fine.

Oh! You're right. The arrows work very well (just tried it). Great tip. Thank you.

  • Yeah, down scrolling needs to be adjusted somehow. It doesn't even work at all in build mode for me and I ended up getting frustrated and using the arrows as a work around.

  • If you notice there is a border bar at the bottom of the screen. When you move your mouse to the top edge of that bar the edgescrolling will engage. If you go past it than it will stop. It's a very fine line where it works and takes some getting used to. Hope that helps.
  • I think the most frustrating thing for me is as others stated: the scrolling in build/buy mode. It is really ineffective and frustrating.

  • I am so glad I'm not the only one frustrated with the camera movement. I'll have to check my settings and try the arrow keys as well. Thank y'all for posting.
  • Thank goodness. I was getting extremely frustrated. lol

  • As far as I can tell, I think the issue is caused by the GUI overlay. (Translucent white control bar areas.) When the cursor is on one of those overlay areas, it is no longer considered to be 'on' the main window and its behavior is programmed differently. Only when the cursor in 'on/in' the main window (not over a GUI overlay) will it cause an edgescroll at the edge of the screen.
Since the UI basically extends across the entire bottom of the screen, edgescrolling down is an issue. Getting the cursor down low enough to trigger the edgescroll -without- moving it onto the GUI overlay then, becomes the solution. Hopefully they can do a little tweaking to make that a bit easier to work with.
I hope that helps folks understand what's going on and how to work with it.

  • Well, I guess we have found a bug! I hope we won't have to wait until the Sims 5 until this gets fixed, for a change.
  • after some hours of play Sims 3, I quit it and want continue a few with Sims 4, and just I had same scrool problem
    Cant go down

Good thing it's not only me who have the problem, I think I have figured out some of it, but really wish we could tilt the camera. If we can I haven't figured it out yet

@kiwi84 you need to switch to Sims 3 style camera mode in options in order to do that. I don't think you can tilt in the new camera mode, at least I couldn't figure out how. Problem is that scrolling is a pain in TS3 mode ;-)
  • @Ogodei thank you so much I actually thought I had changed the camera, but then I must have done something wrong. So glad to hear we can tilt the camera

The scrolling in build mode is the hardest for sure. Still working through that.
But for gameplay, I found the 'sweet spot' for scrolling down to be on either side of the speed arrows just about the interface. If you go in to the UI, it stops.
  • I can't seem to tilt the camera in sims3 mode can someone tell me how? I really miss it!
